NEW EBOLA OUTBREAK IN DRC

Dear colleagues,

An outbreak of Ebola has been reported in North Kivu Province located in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The announcement was issued on 1st August2018, slightly more than a week after the Ministry of Health (MoH) declared the end of an outbreak in Equateur Province. So far, the MoH of the DRC has notified WHO that four out of six samples tested positive for Ebola virus disease (EVD) at the Institut National de Recherche Biornedicale (INRB) in Kinshasa. Further testing is on-going and we will keep updating you.

In response to this new outbreak, the Government of Kenya has asked all health care workers in health facilities and those at the points of entry to undertake the following:

  1. Detailed personal, clinical and contact information of ALL travellers from the DRC at all ports of entry
  2. Watch out for any person presenting with acute onset of fever;
  3. A history of travel from the DRC or contact with a person from the DRC within the previous three weeks PLUS anyone presenting the following; a. Vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, headache, sore throat, measles like rash, red eyes or bleeding from body openings.
