During the week of May 28–June 3, 2018 the following activities will take place at ILRI:

Integrated Sciences Directorate:

  • May 29–31: Iain Wright will participate in the World Milk Day celebrations and give a Keynote presentation at the National Livestock Expo in Arusha – an event hosted by the Agricultural Council of Tanzania / Tanzania Dairy Board.

Policies, Institutions and Livelihoods:

  • May 28–30: Nelly Njiru, Joyce Wanderi and Nicoline de Haan will be facilitating a joint regional FAO-ILRI gender and livestock workshop in Gigiri for ministry of livestock/agriculture and FAO staff from 8 countries.
  • May 28–30: Karl Rich will be in a workshop with Ulf Magnusson on a project on AMR in Thailand.
  • May 28–June 03: Ms. Thanammal Ravichandran, part of the gender team and a student working with Alessandra Galie, will visit Addis Ababa to work with the ILRI LMP team — to focus on the analysis and writeup of aspects of the gender and social inclusion fieldwork she has carried out in Bihar, India. She, as well as Isabelle and Nicoline are helping to add the gender/social inclusion lens to the evaluation of alternative investment interventions for the Bihar LMP.
  • May 25–June 02: Joseph Karugia, Paul Guthiga and Stella Massawe will travel to Cotonou, Benin to participate in the Inaugural Meeting of the Biennial Review Task Force.

BecA-ILRI Hub:

  • May 29–31: Clay Sneller, Catherine Ziyomo, Martin Kanyeki, Mercy Chepngetich and Jennifer Kinuthia will travel to Cote d’Ivoire for the “Using markers for diversity and marker-assisted selection (MAS)” workshop under the Integrated Genotyping Support and Service (IGSS) program. The workshop will be held at the Residence Hotel Le Vaisseau and is sponsored by IGSS which is a Bill & Melinda Gates funded project, with support from the Excellence in Breeding (EiB) and Genomics Open-Source Breeding and Informatics Initiative (GOBII).

The purpose of the workshop is to improve the skills of scientists and staff in the areas of data management, molecular marker data, using markers in diversity analyses, mapping gene and QTLs, and implementing MAS. It is aimed at people from programs that are partnering with the IGSS either through an accepted proposal or by being a member of our Maize or Bean Communities of Practice.

Livestock Genetics:

  • May 28–June 04: Steve Kemp, Phil Toye & Yue Yaojin will attend the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health(CTLGH) Project meetings in London & Edinburgh, UK.
  • May 30–31: Okeyo Mwai, Karen Marshall & Raphael Mrode will attend the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics and Health(CTLGH) Dairy Genomics workshop at the Roslin Institute, UK.

  • May 26–30: Johanna Lindahl will be working at Uppsala University.
  • May 28–30: Karl Rich will be in a workshop with Ulf Magnusson on a project on AMR in Thailand.
  • May 28–30: Fred Unger and Hung Nguyen will join feedback meetings in Vientiane, Laos being part of a case study on pork parasitic zoonoses.
  • On May 30, Hu Suk Lee, Thang Tien Nguyen, Chi Nguyen and Thanh Nguyen will attend Annual One Health Conference in Hanoi.
  • May 30–June 1st: Fred Unger will participate in the defense of MSc thesis of Mr. Minh and Ms Yama (7th batch VPHCAP students) at Chiang Mai University, Thailand.

  • May 26– June 2: N2Africa project team Birhan Abdulkadir, Tamiru Amanu and Simret Yasabu will be attending various partners’ pre- season meetings that will be held in Pawe, Bako and Bahirdar. The team will split itself to ensure there is a good representation of the project staff in each of the meetings. The events are organized by the various public -private partnership clusters that N2Africa has designed and developed partnerships to ensure long-term sustainability of knowledge transfer, legume technology dissemination, efficient input supply chains and access to markets.
  • May 28–June 1: Annet Mulema, Mamusha Lemma, Hiwot Desta and Wole Kinanti (ICARDA) will be in Doyogena to raise community awareness about gender dynamics at household level in relation to animal health management. Specifically, they will test a community-based gender transformative approach to reduce risk of zoonotic diseases among small ruminant farmers in the highlands of Ethiopia. This will be done in two kebeles.
  • On May 28, Fiona Flintan will be attending a planning meeting on behalf of the ILRI/ILC Rangelands Initiative with the FAO-Pastoralist Knowledge Hub in Rome for a proposal on the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on Governance and Tenure Technical Guide No. 6 on Improving Governance in Pastoral Lands.
  • On May 29, Fiona Flintan will be attending a planning meeting on the next year programme for the ILC’s Rangelands Initiative with the ILC Secretariat, based at IFAD Rome.
  • On May 31st, Fiona Flintan will be making a presentation of progress of a research project on defining a pastoralist household and implications for aid delivery to the DRM-Task Force in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock with other research implementers as part of a three-case study research project focused on resilience funded by EU/FAO.
  • On June 1st, Fiona Flintan will be attending a writing session for a policy brief/common statement from development partners on pastoralism at USAID Addis Ababa.

ILRI South Asia: Compiled by Oli Roma (O.roma)

  • Padma will be in Dehradun (1st June) to participate in the DBT (Department of Biotechnology) seminar on Value-added Biomass & Products from Natural Resources”. In this meeting he will make a presentation on “deconstruction of lignocellulose biomass using 2nd generation biofuel technologies.
