Institutes’ items require permit before entering Ethiopia

Dear Colleagues,

Please be aware that any items of the institutes’ (more specifically electronics) that needs to be brought in into Ethiopia for research purposes or other use must come through DHL or Cargo services. It is crucial we take a note of this and act accordingly.

We are seeing more and more staff travelling to Ethiopia bringing in tablets and other items without permits. These items gets seized by airport customs and get registered in the name of the traveler not in the name of the institute. This makes it very difficult for ILRI to obtain a permit from Ministry of Foreign Affairs for items that are registered in individual names and are brought in without following proper procedures.

I therefore request you to follow the below steps to ensure that we are abiding by the law of the country.

  1. Send items via DHL or cargo services in the name of ILRI
  2. Please provide invoice and packing list for clearing purposes

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

Kumneger Tilahun | National Liaison and Protocol Manager
