ILRI NRS Staff appointments, Nairobi: September – December 2016
Esther Ndirangu joined International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in the Internal Audit unit as an Internal Audit Clerk, effective November 2016. Her role is to provide support to internal auditors, facilitate logistics, risk management meetings and other office operations as well as ensuring accurate and complete full cost recovery and cost allocation. She holds a B.Com degree, Finance major from Strathmore University.
Zipporah Kakungu was appointed as Finance Officer (support units) in Corporate Services effective November 2016. She is responsible for preparation and analysis of monthly support units’ reports, timely payments to staff and suppliers and monthly costing and billing of all services among others. Prior to this appointment, she was an accountant supporting BecA and Biosciences. She has over six years’ experience in finance and
accounting and holds a B.Com degree in Finance from the University of Nairobi. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of ICPAK. Currently, she is finalizing her project in MSc, Finance and Investments at the University of Nairobi.
Leonard Kirui joined ILRI as Research Associate in the ReSAKSS program in November 2016. Prior to joining ILRI, Kirui worked at the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPP
RA), as a Research Assistant in the Productive Sector Division. He holds a MSc degree in Agricultural and Applied Economics from Egerton University, Kenya and a BSc Degree in Agricultural Economics and Resource Management from Moi University, Kenya.
Stephen Oloo joined ILRI in December 2016 as a Spatial Data Analyst in the Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) program. His key role is to model the spatial distribution of livestock, livestock products and factors that influence the spatial distribution of livestock. Stephen joins ILRI from KEMRI-Wellcome Trus
t Research Program where he worked as a spatial analyst in the Malaria INFORM project. Stephen has a BSc degree in Geospatial Engineering from the University of Nairobi.
ILRI NRS staff appointments, Vietnam: September – December 2016
My Hanh Le was appointed as an Administrative Assistant in the ILRI Vietnam office effective September 2016. Prior to this appointment, she was an intern in ILRI in Administration. In her new position she will be assisting the Office Manager to ensure and maintain effectiveness of the office’s operations. She holds a BA degree in International Economics from the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam.

Kumlachew Geremew has been appointed as National Coordinator in Animal Biosciences Program, African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) Project effective October 2016. Kumlachew holds a MSc degree in Public Health, Debre Markos College of Health Sciences, Ethiopia, MA degree in Sociology, Indira Gandhi, National Open University, New Delhi, India and BA degree in Management and Public Administration from Addis Ababa University. Prior to joining ILRI, he was working as Program Officer with Pact International, Ethiopia.
Welansa Belayneh has been appointed as Transport Coordinator in Supply Chain unit effective December 2016. She holds a BSc degree in Automotive Technology from Nazareth Technical College and Diploma in Marketing Management from Addis Ababa University School of Commerce. Before joining ILRI, she was working as a Transport Clerk at World Health Organization, Ethiopia.
Abeba Zenebe joined ILRI as Accountant in Finance unit effective December 2016. She a holds BA degree in Accounting and Finance from Addis Ababa University. Before joining ILRI, she was working as Senior Finance Officer at Pact International, Ethiopia.
ILRI IRS staff appointments: September – December 2016
Phil Sambati joined ILRI as an Instructional Design Specialist in the Capacity Development unit in September 2016. Phil’s role will support a number of projects and flagships of the Livestock CRP, and will bring to bear experience and knowledge around learning psychology, blended and online learning and educational technology as well as other complementary skills such as graphic
design and user experience design and information architecture.
Phil’s background is in teaching and ICT, and has worked in adult education for nearly 20 years in one form or another which has included a lot of time in the classroom as well as systems administration, web development, cloud computing, e-learning authoring, mobile learning tools and applications development. He holds an MSc in technology enhanced education, blended learning and online learning pedagogy and design. Phil is from Britain.
Nathan Jensen was appointed as Scientist in the Livestock Systems and Environment program within the IBLI unit in November 2016. His research deals with poverty reduction and resilience, with a focus on resilience, social protection, financial tools, and innovative approaches to data collection.

r to joining ILRI, he was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali from 2005-2007. He then worked with agro-pastoralists in Bolivia while pursuing a Masters in Agriculture and Applied Economics from the University of Missouri-Columbia. From Missouri, he moved to Cornell University as an IGERT fellow in Food Systems and Poverty Reduction and completed his PhD in Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University in 2014, during which he worked closely with the IBLI team as a postdoctoral associate at Cornell University. Nathan is from the USA.
Barbara Bamanya joined ILRI’s Accelerated Value Chains Development Program (AVCD) as a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Specialist in November 2016. Spanning a 20 year career as a M & E specialist, Barbara previously worked with AGRA as a Senior M&E officer for seven years where she joined after serving Zambia’s Ministry of Finance and National Planning in Lusaka for almost three years, leading monitoring and evaluation for the public expenditure, financial management and accountability reforms program. Her other experience as a M & E specialist was with
the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), in Nairobi, Kenya, EU Micro projects’ program in Uganda and the Ugandan Government. Barbara holds a Master of Science degree in Social Work from Goteborg University (Sweden) and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and Social Administration from Makerere University (Uganda).
