What’s in it for me?
Putting your ideas forward in the IPM gives you an opportunity to solicit input and prospect for potentially unrecognized collaborations across the institute. By the end of the exercise, a group of ideas will be selected to receive financial support to begin progressing with strategic seed funding, and will gain visibility within the institute. Those ideas that are not among of the final set will also be available to ILRI senior managers—concepts in their back pockets—for pulling out in their ongoing discussions with the heads of donor agencies. Given the number of engagements ILRI managers have with donors and other partners, your idea could well form the basis of the next big ILRI grant, and help people create better livelihoods through livestock.
We recommend you pitch everything that comes to mind, including fragmented ideas and ideas too weird for the ‘research proposal’ format. Pitch them all. We’ll read every one. There’s a good chance someone else will want to work with you on a crazy-sounding idea. And who knows, you just might catch the attention of someone who can make a difference, and help you get your idea going.
