People on the Addis Ababa campus will soon see a set of new signs erected across the campus. These will be erected outside the main gate, at road junctions, and on buildings. This is part of an effort to improve and make much more consistent the current mix of signs on the campus.
The signs will help visitors find their way. They will also point to who’s where on the campus and in different buildings. We will also introduce standard international road and traffic signs.
Some of the changes you will see:
Large maps (see example right) at several locations. These will show locations of buildings and occupants
Each building with a new ‘name’ – see list of names in the map. This goes wit the earlier decision to name each of our meeting rooms.
Direction signs at each junction (see example below right)
International traffic signs (see examples below)
Renumbering of all residences.
Installation of the various signs will take place in the coming weeks.
Background
Last year, the ILRI director general requested that the ‘public signage’ on both ILRI campus be upgraded. A task force was composed to “provide consistent, coherent, and comprehensive signage that informs and guides all people working on or visiting our campuses. A key aspect is that the signage should be clear and consistent (across both campuses) and meet ILRI and CGIAR branding requirements.”
The signage project scope included all signs on both campuses, including:
- Informational
- Directional
- Safety
From office doors to campus entrance gates and encompassing all aspects of the signs including:
- Design and branding
- Language
- Materials and engineering
- Updating
- Physical locations
In this phase, signs cover all external requirements, signage inside buildings will follow (when funds allow).
