Gone too soon – Douglas Ikong’o

14255367438_26029f6f36_oDouglas Ikong’o passed away on the night of Friday 6 June, 2014. He joined the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) on 2 April, 2003 and was a project assistant in the Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) program.

Dougie, as many knew him, dedicated his life to serving people. Always with a cheerful heart, his generosity and unselfishness for his colleagues, friends and family will always be remembered.

‘His passing away brings to an end the long and dedicated service to ILRI of the Ikong’o family, as not only did Douglas dedicate 12 years of his working life to ILRI, but so did his mother Sarah Ikong’o for 20 years before. Douglas was a very quiet and unassuming person, a man of few words in public but a very caring individual with an endearing smile that was readily offered to those who worked or visited Mara House or met him for early evening ‘cool down’ at Enkare,’ said Jimmy Smith, the director general of ILRI.

Although his life was cut short, he was able to live it to the fullest, savouring and cherishing every moment. He understood the quality of life and knew that the quality of life exceeded the amount of years lived on this planet.

The cortege leaves Lee funeral home on at 08:30 am on Wednesday 18 June 2014 for the funeral service at All Saints Cathedral. Dougie will be laid to rest on Friday 20 June at his parents’ home in Akites village, Teso South.

Rest in peace Douglas, we loved you, but God loved you more.
