ASSENATH KABUGI was appointed as Program Management Officer (PMO) for the Livestock Systems and the Environment (LSE) program, Integrated Sciences effective 1 July, 2013. She joined ILRI in 2010 as a Program Assistant for the Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) E.A regional office. She has over 7 years administrative and financial management experience gained from the nonprofit and the private sector.
She holds a Master of Science degree in Organizational Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business Administration, majoring in Finance from the United States International University (USIU) – Africa.
JOHN NGURE was appointed as the Payroll Accountant effective 1 July, 2013. Prior to this appointment, he worked with ILRI as the Payroll assistant Accountant.John holds a BCom (Finance) degree from Kenyatta University and is a certified public accountant. John has previously worked as a Payroll Accountant and Accounts Payable Accountant at The Standard Media Group.
TIMOTHY MUTUKU was appointed as Human Resources Assistant-Recruitment from 12 August, 2013. He previously worked in ILRI from February to April 2012 as HR assistant on temporary terms. Previously, Timothy worked as HR assistant in Ultra limited and as Talent Acquisition Intern in Safaricom.
Timothy holds a BSc. in Human Resource Management from Moi University, a Higher Diploma and Diploma in Human Resource from Railway Training Institute.
DEDAN GITHAE joined ILRI on 6 August, 2013 as a Bioinformatician in the ILRI- BecA hub. His background is in Biochemistry and Molecular biology (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology) and Bioinformatics (University of Manchester). Dedan has done research internships at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, and at the Biocomputing lab, University of Rome (La Sapienza), Italy, both focusing on protein function prediction, protein structure modelling and alignments.
OBED ATEKA has been appointed as Program Accountant within the Policy, Trade and Value Chain (PTVC) program effective 12 August, 2013. Obed has several years of experience in project accounting, budgeting, grants management and operations management.
He holds a Degree in Business Studies from Kenyatta University, a Certified Public Accountant (CPA K) qualification and a Certified Public Secretary (CPS K) from the Kenya Accountants & Secretaries National Examination Board.
Prior to joining PTVC, Obed served as a Program Assistant within the Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) Program and previously as a Budget & Grants Accountant in Finance.
EMMANUEL KEYA has joined the Food Safety and Zoonoses team as a Programme Accountant effective 12 August, 2013. He has more than six years’ experience in project, grants and financial management. He joined ILRI as a Grants Accountant in March 2011. Prior to joining ILRI, he worked as a Regional Finance Officer, with the Kenya Red Cross Society. Emmanuel holds a BSc. degree in BA and a Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. CPA (K) He is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK)
IMMACULATE WAITHAKA has joined the directorate department as an Office Assistant on 12 August, 2013.Prior to this appointment, she has been working in the catering unit as a waitress/ Cashier for a period of 7 years. She is a diploma graduate in Hotel and Catering Management from Nairobi Aviation College and certificate in Food and Beverage sales from Kenya Utalii College.
HARRISON NJAMBA joined ILRI as a Data Systems Manager within the Humidtropics project on 19 August, 2013. He holds a degree in B.Sc. Information Science from Moi University. His main interests are in database management, programming, computer hardware and networking. He has more than ten years’ experience working with various organizations as a database manager, computer programmer and IT specialist, managing large datasets for longitudinal data and programming in different computer languages.
SABINA GITAU has joined the Livestock, Systems and Environment team as a Programme Accountant on 1 September, 2013. She has more than eight years’ experience in project, grants and financial management. She joined ILRI as a Grants Accountant in September 2010. Prior to joining ILRI she worked as a project Accountant with the Compassion International and Save the Children as a Financial Accountant/Consultant. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business Administration, is a CPA (K), and is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
ANITA MUTUA joined ILRI, Human Resources department effective 7 August, 2013 from Ernst and Young. She is a HR Generalist with sound knowledge and experience in all areas of Human Resources management including Job evaluation. She has a BA degree in Political Science and Sociology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and is currently finalizing her project work for her MSc. degree in Human Resources management. She is also a Certified Professional Trainer and Counselor.
JAMES MACHARIA Joined ILRI on 12 August, 2013 as Mechanical & Refrigeration Engineering Supervisor. He holds BSc. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi and has extensive working experience in Manufacturing, Services and Construction with key interest in planning, design, installation, maintenance, continuous research and development. His previous experiences include Projects in corporates and privately owned companies in Kenya and Sudan. He is conversant with various Management Systems in various fields of such as ISO 9000, Environment Health and Safety (EHS), Statistical Quality Control among others.
ERICK RUTTO joined ILRI as Research Technician III- Data Systems on 2 September, 2013. He has more than 3 years’ experience in Data Management and Data Systems Design gained from his recent positions at the Centre for Public Health Research and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI).
Erick worked under various projects carried out by KEMRI in collaboration with different organizations such as world Food Programme, Kenya Agricultural Research Institute, Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, East Africa Laboratory Networking Project and World Bank among others. He has also worked as an ICT Consultant for The Institute for Social Accountability. He is a BSc. Computer Science graduate from Egerton University and holds a CCNA certification from Kenyatta University.
MACDONALD NGANGI has joined ILRI in a capacity of Program Accountant within the animal bioscience program effective 2 September, 2013. He has more than seven years’ experience in accounting work having previously worked in hotel industry and aviation industry. Prior to this appointment, he worked with World Vision Kenya based in Kakuma Refugee camp in Turkana north. He implemented a WFP grant which started in April 2013 and expected to end in March 2014. He is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPAK) and holds a degree in Bcom, Finance option.
ESTHER NDUNG’U
joined ILRI as an Administrative Assistant, Livestock and Fish program on 2 September, 2013. She has more than 8 years in the administration experience working with both the NGO and the private sector. She was recently working at African Research and Resource Forum (ARRF) before joining ILRI. She has a Diploma in Business and Office Management from Kenya School of Professional Studies (Now Inoorero University).

OND RONO has joined ILRI as a Research technician-ReSAKKS on 2 September, 2013. He has 2 years’ experience in research methods, data analysis, report writing and knowledge dissemination. Recently, he worked for Tegemeo Institute of Agricultural policy and analysis as a research assistant. Rono has a BSc in Agricultural Economics.
ROSE MANYU has been appointed as the Programme Assistant for the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) effective 2 September, 2013. She has five years of experience in office administration and previously worked as an administrative assistant for CCAFS where she has offered administrative support to the Programme. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree (Accounting Option) from Maseno University, Certified Public Secretaries (CPS) qualifications and is currently finalizing her studies in Certified Public Accountants qualifications from the Kenya Accountants & Secretaries National Examination Board.
ELIZABETH NGUNGU joined CCAFS as a Program Accountant effective 9 September, 2013, from the Finance unit where she has been serving as an Assistant Accountant since October 2012. She holds a Bcom degree, Accounting from the University of Nairobi and is a Certified Public Accountant CPAK. Previously, she worked as an Assistant Accountant at Rural Poverty reduction and Local Government Support Programme.
LINDA NJERI has joined Animal Biosciences as an Administrative Assistant effective 9 September, 2013. She has been in ILRI since June 2012 to September 2012 as a program assistant Livelihood Gender and Impact (LGI) on internship program and promoted in June 2013 as a temporary program assistant.
Linda holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management (finance major) from Moi University and a diploma in project management from Kenya institute of management.
ANNE GESARE joined ILRI as a Research Analyst on 9 September, 2013. She holds a MSc in Agricultural and Applied economics from the University of Nairobi. Prior to joining ILRI, she was an Msc. Research Fellow at the Tegemeo Institute of Egerton University and has led the implementation of several projects in the country. Anne has experience in designing and execution of research projects, data management and analysis and report writing.
PAULINE ALUOCH has been appointed as Administrative Assistant in the Livestock Systems & Environment program effective 1 September, 2013. She joined ILRI as an Administrative Clerk in September 2008. She has seven years’ experience in administrative and logistical support. She has worked previously in the private sector as an administrator and is currently pursuing a BA in Business Administration She has a diploma in Business Administration and CPA part 2 holder.
ANNE MIKI joined the CCAFS Theme as a Program Assistant in 16 September, 2013. She joined ILRI as an Administrative Assistant in July 2004. She has more than 8 years’ experience in administration, having worked and supported the Engineering, Animal Units and the Breeding Strategies Team. She holds a Bsc. in Food science and Technology from Egerton University and a post graduate diploma in Project Management from the Kenya Institute of Management.
DAVID KIEREINI joined ILRI on 1 August, 2013 as the Program Management Officer (PMO) for the Vaccines Biosciences Program. David previously worked with the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) as the project accountant and prior to joining ACTS, he worked with the African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) as an Accounts officer.
David holds a MSc. in Organizational Development from the United States International University (USIU), Nairobi and a BCom degree in Finance from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi. David has over 5 years’ experience in grant and financial management gained through working in donor-funded projects in the non-profit and private sector.
EVANS ASETA was appointed as the Electronics Engineering Supervisor Effective 6 August, 2013. He joined ILRI in 2006 as an intern, and as an Electronics technician. Having an experience of over 7 years in lab equipment maintenance, he was able to ascend to the position of the Supervisor for the section. Evans holds a Higher National Diploma from the Technical University of Kenya. He has done PLC (ST-7SERV1 S7) Maintenance Part 1, from Siemens South Africa and also trained on Biosafety Cabinets Training Course under African Biological Safety Association (AfBSA), Canada.
JENIFER TIMBOMEI joined ILRI on September 2, 2013 as HR Officer – Compensation & Benefits. She has over seven years’ HR Generalist experience, having worked with World Vision and the US Army Medical Research Unit (WRP/KEMRI). She holds a Bcom degree with HR specialization, a Postgraduate Higher Diploma in Human Resource Management and is currently finalizing her project work for her MBA in Strategic Management. She is also trained in Workplace Counselor and is a member of the Institute of Human Resource Management – Kenya (IHRM).
PHILEMON CHELANG’A has joined ILRI as a Research Analyst with the IBLI project effective 16 September, 2013. He has been a Research and Development manager at the National Potato Council of Kenya (NPCK) as well as a part-time lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Business Management at Egerton University, teaching Institutional Economics, Rural Development and Agricultural Marketing. He specialized in Rural Development while doing his masters at University of Pretoria-South Africa. He is currently interested in promoting technologies that are geared toward improving the livelihoods of smallholders in ASAL areas. He has over the past conducted research on: Innovations for sustainable production and utilization of Pearl millet in drought prone areas of Eastern and Central Africa with ICRISAT, Innovations/Technologies for Climate Change Adaptation in Agriculture, Water and Energy with EACIN and also on up scaling innovations for quality seed potato production in East and central Africa with NPCK.
Simon Turere joined ILRI as Program Management Officer on 25th June 2013. He has more than six years’ grants management, administration and financial management experience with two International NGOs and one local NGO in Kenya. He has worked in the Global Fund Program with CARE International in Kenya; child sponsorship program with Childfund International in Kenya; and the USAID APHIA II project with Enaitoti Biashara CBO in Kenya. Recently, with CARE International In Kenya, he oversaw 9 national and international sub-recipients of the Civil Society component of the Global Fund Round 7 Program in Kenya. He contributed to the consistent attainment of an A1 rating, the highest assessment of grants performance by the Global Fund, by CARE International in Kenya. The rating has never been achieved since the Global Fund started funding Kenya. He has a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Nairobi, Kenya.
