ILRI strategy development – next steps

In February and March many of you gave feedback and suggestions – and answers – to a series of questions we asked to help the Strategy Development Taskforce do it work. What happened? What’s happening next?

What’s already happened?

Read the outline of a new strategy 2013-2022 discussed by the Board at the end of March. The Board gave us a green light to take these ideas further as well as providing some input into the development and ideas included. Please take a look and share any comments you might have.

See the answers and feedback you provided on the Taskforce questions . We also asked you to  suggest a tagline that captures the essence of ILRI. Ideas still welcome!

See what emerged from the High-Level Consultation on a Global Livestock Agenda to 2020, co-hosted by the World Bank and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya, 12–13 Mar 2012

As well as the communiqué issued by participants in the Consultation, catch up on these blogposts written by Susan MacMillan:

What’s happening now?

Taking on board comments from the Board and feedback you provided, the Task Force is working on a strategy ‘storyline’ that sets out the overall concept that underpins our new strategy. The storyline sets out three high-level ‘typologies’ of livestock development which the team thinks will determine the strategic approaches ILRI will need to follow.  In the coming week or so we will share this with you for your expert comments.

In developing this storyline, the team has come up against several bigger questions that we can only address through further engagement with you, and with some of our partners. What do these look like? As an example, we know that livestock productivity is fundamental in our area; is this an area that ILRI should re-emphasize, together with national partners and if so, how should be best do this? We face similar dilemma’s regarding our work in livestock and health, in value chains, on the relations between livestock and climate change, and so on.  We will have a series of short questions for you to help us make some initial choices.

Alongside the work of the team, Gabrielle Persley has organized a focused consultation exercise to unpack potential biosciences priorities for ILRI. The first phase is nearing completion and we hope to share the results in the near future.

Finally, we recognize the need for a wide, targeted, consultation with stakeholders and partners as a direct input to our strategy development.  In the coming months, we expect to hold various small face to face events and online conversations seeking specific inputs. We also hope to catch up with key people as part of other events that we are attending.

So, what’s next?

You will be invited to read and respond to the ‘storyline’

At about the same time, you will be asked to help us tackle some of the key  issues.

You will have a chance to react to – and validate – the key elements of the biosciences consultation exercise.

We expect to contact you further on other areas we need to address as part of our strategy – impact pathways, our vision, mission and values, and, as important, on what type of organization we need to be, and want to be.

We are also devising a forum? to ensure regular interactions on the strategy.
